Meals & Nutrition Information
- WHAT IS THE NUTRITION PROGRAM FOR THE ELDERLY?
Hot, well-balanced meals are provided at midday for senior citizens. Meals are served in comfortable congregate dining facilities. Any person 60 years of age and over is eligible to participate. Spouses are automatically included regardless of age.
- RESERVATIONS
A reservation is required one day in advance. For example, make your reservation for Monday on Thursday or Friday, depending upon the center location you wish to attend. All senior centers have this policy. Call between 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
- WHEN MAY I ATTEND A SENIOR CENTER?
You may attend as often as you wish, provided you have made a reservation. Southwest 8 operates 28 senior centers in the eight county area. Most centers serve meals four and five days weekly.
- HOMEBOUND MEALS
Homebound meals are available in communities with no similar program exists. Persons over 60 who are unable to come to the senior center are eligible to receive the same, hot nutritious meal in their homes on the suggested contribution basis used at the center. Center volunteers deliver these meals. Call Southwest 8 or your local center for more details.
- WHO OPERATES THE NUTRITION PROGRAM?
Southwest 8 Senior Services, Inc. sponsors the nutrition program in southwest Iowa. The agency has 28 senior centers in Cass, Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Montgomery, Page, Pottawattamie and Shelby counties. Over 1,200 persons receive meals through the senior centers each day. A registered dietitian approves the menus to ensure compliance with dietary guidelines.
- OTHER SERVICES ARE OFFERED
The congregate senior centers serve as a forum for information exchange. Participants are kept informed of upcoming events and meetings. Most communities have older volunteers who have been trained to help their peers seek information and or help their need with particular problems. Southwest 8 seeks to help older people contact other existing service providers when their services are needed. Nutrition education, recreation activities and educational opportunities are provided on a regular basis.
- WHAT IS THE CHARGE FOR MEALS?
There is no charge for this program. A $3.00 contribution is suggested and encouraged. Your contribution is confidential. Your contribution helps provide more services for senior citizens.
